Alkaline solubilization and microwave irradiation as a combined sludge disintegration and minimization method
1Department of Environmental Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey.
Combining alkaline and microwave (MW) sludge pretreatment significantly enhances waste activated sludge (WAS) dewaterability and anaerobic digestion. This combined method improves biogas and methane production while reducing sludge volume.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Engineering
- Waste Management
- Biotechnology
Background:
- Waste activated sludge (WAS) management is a significant challenge in wastewater treatment.
- Conventional pretreatment methods like alkaline solubilization can improve dewaterability but may have limitations.
- Microwave (MW) irradiation is an emerging technology with potential for sludge treatment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the combined effects of alkaline and microwave (MW) irradiation as a pretreatment method for waste activated sludge (WAS).
- To evaluate the impact of this combined pretreatment on sludge solubilization, dewaterability, and anaerobic digestion performance.
- To assess the potential of this method for sludge minimization and resource recovery.
Main Methods:
- Alkaline pretreatment using NaOH was combined with microwave (MW) irradiation at 160°C.
- Pretreatment methods were tested separately and in combination under various conditions (pH 10-12.5).
- Effects on chemical oxygen demand (COD) solubilization, turbidity, and capillary suction time (CST) were measured.
- Batch and semi-continuous anaerobic digestion reactors were used to assess biogas and methane production.
- Sludge minimization was evaluated through reductions in total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), and TCOD.
Main Results:
- Combined alkaline-MW pretreatment significantly increased soluble COD (SCOD/TCOD) compared to individual methods.
- Dewaterability, often worsened by alkaline treatment alone, was improved by the addition of MW irradiation.
- Highest total gas and methane production improvements (16.3% and 18.9%) were observed with MW+pH-12 pretreatment in batch reactors.
- In semi-continuous reactors, MW+pH-12 pretreatment yielded 43.5% and 55% improvements in daily gas and methane production, respectively.
- TS, VS, and TCOD reductions were improved by 24.9%, 35.4%, and 30.3%, respectively.
- Pretreated digested sludge showed 22% improved dewaterability.
Conclusions:
- The combined alkaline-microwave pretreatment is an effective strategy for waste activated sludge (WAS) minimization.
- This integrated approach enhances sludge dewaterability and significantly boosts anaerobic digestion efficiency, leading to increased biogas and methane yields.
- The method offers a promising solution for improving the overall sustainability of wastewater treatment processes.
