Background:

International adoption is increasing globally, with Italy facilitating around 2,000 adoptions annually.
Adoptive families often face complex challenges requiring integrated support.
Children adopted internationally may present unique medical and psychological needs.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the health status of recently arrived internationally adopted children.
To assess the needs of adoptive families and their caregiver function.
To determine the effectiveness of combined medical and psychological interventions.

Main Methods:

Clinical evaluation of children during a day hospital stay.
Assessment of medical and psychological conditions.
Analysis of data from 113 children and 89 families.

Main Results:

Most evaluated children presented acute physical conditions requiring significant parental support.
Parents function as caregivers on multiple levels: child-rearing, managing pre-adoption issues, and caring for illness.
Combined medical and psychological interventions were found to be beneficial.
