Structural Joints: Cartilaginous Joints

As the name indicates, at a cartilaginous joint, the adjacent bones are united by cartilage, a tough but flexible type of connective tissue. Unlike synovial joints, these types of joints lack a joint cavity and involve bones joined together by either hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage.
There are two types of cartilaginous joints:
Synchondrosis
A synchondrosis ("joined by cartilage") is a cartilaginous joint where bones are connected by hyaline cartilage. Synchondrosis may be temporary or...
Signs of Puberty01:27

Signs of Puberty

Puberty is a critical phase, typically beginning between the ages of 8 and 13 in girls and 9 and 14 in boys, though timing can vary based on genetics, environmental factors, and overall health. This period is characterized by the development of secondary sexual characteristics and the attainment of reproductive potential. Endocrine changes underpin puberty, with hormonal surges of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) instigated by Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH)...

Summary

Labor significantly widens the symphysis pubis (the pelvic joint) in most women. This joint widening varies greatly and is inversely correlated with maternal age in first-time mothers.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Human Anatomy
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • The symphysis pubis is a key joint in the female pelvis.
  • Understanding symphyseal joint dynamics during labor is crucial for assessing pelvic biomechanics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify changes in symphysis pubis width during different stages of labor.
  • To investigate factors influencing symphyseal widening, such as maternal age.

Main Methods:

  • Serial ultrasound examinations of 32 women during labor.
  • Measurements of symphysis pubis width at superior and narrowest points during latent, active, and second stages.
  • Correlation analysis between symphyseal widening and maternal age.

Main Results:

  • Significant symphysis pubis widening occurred between the first and second stages of labor.
  • Widening was observed in 94% of women at the superior border and 59% at the narrowest point.
  • A wide spectrum of widening (9-139%) was recorded; inverse correlation with maternal age noted in nulliparas.

Conclusions:

  • Labor is associated with substantial symphysis pubis widening in the majority of women.
  • The degree of symphyseal widening exhibits considerable inter-individual variation.
  • Maternal age may influence the extent of symphyseal joint laxity during childbirth in nulliparous women.
