Summary

Vibration exposure from hand tools in an aircraft company is linked to increased white finger (hand-arm vibration syndrome) prevalence. Further research into tool insulation is recommended to mitigate risks for workers.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Ergonomics
  • Industrial Hygiene

Background:

  • White finger (hand-arm vibration syndrome) is a recognized occupational health concern.
  • Previous studies suggest a link between vibrating tools and white finger, but industry-specific data is valuable.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of white finger symptoms in an aircraft manufacturing setting.
  • To identify correlations between white finger and personal, anthropometrical, and occupational factors.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted among 2,933 employees at a Swedish aircraft company.
  • Data collected included self-reported white finger symptoms, personal details, anthropometry, and work/leisure activities.
  • Statistical analysis, including multivariate testing, was used to identify significant associations.

Main Results:

  • A prevalence of 7% (210 employees) reporting white finger symptoms was observed.
  • Significant positive associations were found with increasing age and work involving vibrating hand tools (polishing, deburring, marking).
  • Polishers/grinders (23%), sheet-metal workers (19%), and cleaners (15%) showed the highest prevalence.

Conclusions:

  • Work with specific vibrating hand tools in the aircraft industry likely increases the prevalence of white finger.
  • The findings underscore the need for improved tool insulation and ergonomic interventions to protect workers' hand health.
