Summary

This study shows that surgical correction of valgus ankle osteoarthritis can significantly improve joint function and reduce pain. Most patients experienced positive outcomes, avoiding the need for further procedures like ankle arthroplasty.

Main Results:

  • Twenty out of 22 patients (91%) showed improvement at an average 4.5-year follow-up.
  • Significant improvements were observed in tibiotalar alignment (Takakura Score), pain (visual analog scale), and function (American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Score).
  • Eight patients (41%) were pain-free post-surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical realignment is an effective treatment for valgus ankle osteoarthritis, leading to significant pain reduction and functional improvement.
  • These techniques can potentially prevent or delay the need for total ankle arthroplasty or ankle fusion.
