Background:

  • Post-traumatic headache (PTC) is defined by the International Headache Society (IHS) as occurring within seven days of head trauma.
  • Mild head injury (HI) can lead to various headache presentations and onset times.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the types of headaches following mild head injury (HI).
  • To determine the time interval between mild HI and the onset of headache.
  • To assess if PTC onset aligns with current IHS classifications.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluation of 41 patients diagnosed with mild head injury (HI) according to IHS criteria.
  • Classification of headache types, including migraine without aura and chronic tension-type headache.
  • Analysis of the time interval between HI and headache onset.

Main Results:

  • Migraine without aura (39%) and chronic tension-type headache (34.1%) were the most frequent headache types.
  • Headache onset occurred within seven days post-HI in 48.7% of patients.
  • A significant portion of patients (24.3%) experienced headache onset more than 30 days after mild HI.

  • Post-traumatic headache (PTC) may develop beyond the seven-day window currently accepted by the IHS.

  • Current IHS criteria for PTC onset may need re-evaluation based on these findings.
