Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Metastases to the breast are uncommon secondary malignancies.
  • Typical presentation involves breast nodules, often solitary.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and characterize the presentation of breast metastases.
  • To highlight less common presentations of metastatic breast disease.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 21 cases of breast metastases over 15 years.
  • Analysis of clinical presentation and histopathological findings.

Main Results:

  • Most metastases presented as nodules.
  • Six cases showed diffuse skin thickening and increased breast density, mimicking inflammatory changes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Microscopic lymphangitic spread was confirmed in five of these six cases.
  • Conclusions:

    • Breast metastases can present atypically with diffuse skin thickening.
    • Lymphangitic spread is a significant finding in these unusual presentations.
    • Differential diagnosis should include metastatic disease in inflammatory-appearing breast lesions.
