Young women who smoke are more likely to stop taking oral contraceptives (OC) early. Smoking may indicate risk-taking behaviors leading to early OC discontinuation.

Background:

  • Previous research suggests a potential link between smoking and OC use, but data on early discontinuation are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between smoking status and early discontinuation of oral contraceptives (OC) in young women.
  • To determine if smoking is a predictor of premature OC cessation.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial involving women under 25 initiating OC.
  • Smoking status assessed at enrollment; OC continuation evaluated at 3- and 6-month interviews.
