Bones of the Upper Limb: Radius

The radius is longer of the two bones that make up the human antebrachium or forearm. At the proximal end, the radius articulates with the capitulum of the humerus and the radial notch of the ulna to form the elbow joint. At the distal end, the radius articulates with the ulna via the ulnar notch, forming the distal radioulnar joint. Distally, the radius also attaches to the carpal wrist bones (scaphoid and lunate) to form the radiocarpal joint.

Summary

Radial head arthroplasty is a reliable surgical option for complex radial head fractures. Proper patient selection and management of associated injuries are key to achieving excellent outcomes.

Background:

Radial head fractures often require surgical intervention when non-operative management fails or when associated with elbow instability.
Reconstruction of the radial head may not be feasible for all fracture patterns, necessitating alternative solutions.

Radial head arthroplasty has emerged as a viable treatment for complex radial head fractures.
Concomitant injuries, such as ligamentous disruptions, frequently accompany radial head fractures and require simultaneous management.

Findings:

This article details the surgical technique for radial head arthroplasty.
