  • Patients were diagnosed with primary basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Long-term follow-up was conducted over a 32-year period (1975-2006).
  • Main Results:

    • A total of 740 recurrent malignant neoplasms were identified.
    • The majority of recurrent neoplasms occurred in the skin.
    • Secondary malignancies were also frequently observed in the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, mammary glands, and prostate glands.

    Conclusions:

    • Patients with a history of skin cancer have an increased risk of developing recurrent skin malignancies.
    • There is a notable association between primary skin cancer and the development of secondary cancers in various organs.
    • Long-term surveillance is essential for early detection of recurrent and secondary neoplasms in skin cancer patients.
