Summary

Pulse oximetry monitoring can cause skin necrosis. Recognizing this rare complication, seen in finger and ear probes, can prevent harm to patients.

Observation:

  • Two patients experienced cutaneous necrosis directly related to pulse oximetry device use.
  • One case involved digital skin necrosis from a finger clip sensor.
  • The other case presented as a lesion on the earlobe from an ear probe.

Findings:

  • The necrosis was attributed to prolonged pressure and/or ischemia from the monitoring devices.
  • Early identification of pulse oximetry-induced skin necrosis is crucial.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should be aware of this potential adverse effect of pulse oximetry.
  • Prompt recognition can avoid misdiagnosis and guide preventative measures.
  • Implementing simple protective strategies can mitigate the risk of skin necrosis.
