Determination01:51

Determination

21.0K
During embryogenesis, cells become progressively committed to different fates through a two-step process: specification followed by determination. Specification is demonstrated by removing a segment of an early embryo, “neutrally” culturing the tissue in vitro—for example, in a petri dish with simple medium—and then observing the derivatives. If the cultured region gives rise to cell types that it would normally generate in the embryo, this means that it is specified. In...

Environmental Applications of Microorganisms01:30

Environmental Applications of Microorganisms

1.2K
Microorganisms play a pivotal role in maintaining ecosystem balance by recycling essential elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, as well as supporting processes like bioremediation, wastewater treatment, and biofuel production.Microbes in Elemental CyclesIn the carbon cycle, microorganisms decompose organic matter, releasing carbon dioxide via aerobic respiration. This carbon dioxide is subsequently used by photosynthetic organisms to synthesize organic compounds, closing the...

Rate-Determining Steps03:08

Rate-Determining Steps

37.3K
Relating Reaction Mechanisms
In a multistep reaction mechanism, one of the elementary steps progresses significantly slower than the others. This slowest step is called the rate-limiting step (or rate-determining step). A reaction cannot proceed faster than its slowest step, and hence, the rate-determining step limits the overall reaction rate.
The concept of rate-determining step can be understood from the analogy of a 4-lane freeway with a short-stretch of traffic-bottleneck caused due to...

Environmental Influences on Intelligence01:29

Environmental Influences on Intelligence

950
Despite the strong genetic influence on traits like intelligence, environmental factors significantly shape outcomes. For example, while over 90% of height variation is due to genetic differences, environmental factors such as nutrition also have a notable impact. Similarly, for intelligence, changes in a child's surroundings can significantly alter their IQ. Research shows that enriched environments boost children's academic success and help them develop key cognitive skills. Children...

Determining Order of Reaction02:53

Determining Order of Reaction

62.4K
Rate laws describe the relationship between the rate of a chemical reaction and the concentration of its reactants. In a rate law, the rate constant k and the reaction orders are determined experimentally by observing how the rate of reaction changes as the concentrations of the reactants are changed. A common experimental approach to the determination of rate laws is the method of initial rates. This method involves measuring reaction rates for multiple experimental trials carried out using...

Determining the pH of Salt Solutions04:08

Determining the pH of Salt Solutions

48.2K
The pH of a salt solution is determined by its component anions and cations. Salts that contain pH-neutral anions and the hydronium ion-producing cations form a solution with a pH less than 7. For example, in ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) solution, NO3− ions do not react with water whereas NH4+ ions produce the hydronium ions resulting in the acidic solution.  In contrast, salts that contain pH-neutral cations and the hydroxide ion-producing anions form a solution with a pH greater than 7. For...

Summary

Social insect caste determination is often assumed to be environmental. However, we found the first evidence of genetic caste determination (GCD) in termites, challenging the prevailing environmental caste determination (ECD) model.

Area of Science:

  • Evolutionary Biology
  • Behavioral Ecology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Social insects exhibit polyphenism, with individuals differentiating into reproductive (royal) and non-reproductive (worker) castes.
  • Environmental caste determination (ECD) is the widely accepted model, suggesting external factors dictate caste.
  • Evidence for ECD in termites is strong for some families but inconclusive for others.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of genotype versus environment in termite caste determination.
  • To present the first documented case of genetically influenced caste determination (GCD) in termites.
  • To re-evaluate existing data and propose methods for distinguishing between ECD and GCD in termites.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing colony composition studies across various termite species.
  • Identification of patterns suggestive of genetic influence on caste allocation.
  • Development of experimental approaches to differentiate between ECD and GCD.

Main Results:

  • Discovery of the first termite species exhibiting genetically influenced caste determination (GCD) for royals and workers.
  • Analysis of previous studies revealed numerous findings consistent with GCD across different termite families.
  • The assumption of universal environmental caste determination (ECD) in termites is challenged.

Conclusions:

  • Genetically influenced caste determination (GCD) is a viable alternative to environmental caste determination (ECD) in termites.
  • Existing data suggests GCD may be more prevalent in termites than previously thought.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms and prevalence of GCD in social insects.
