Summary

General anesthesia for gamete intra-Fallopian transfer (GIFT) using halothane may be inadvisable. Enflurane anesthesia was associated with successful term pregnancies, while halothane was linked to early pregnancy loss.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Anesthesiology

Background:

  • Gamete intra-Fallopian transfer (GIFT) is a key assisted reproductive technology.
  • General anesthesia is sometimes employed during GIFT procedures.
  • The choice of anesthetic agent may impact pregnancy outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of general anesthetic agents on GIFT outcomes.
  • To compare pregnancy and term delivery rates based on anesthetic technique.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective survey of 47 patients undergoing GIFT under general anesthesia.
  • Analysis of pregnancy rates and gestational duration based on anesthetic agents used (enflurane vs. halothane).
  • Data collected over an 18-month period at a single hospital.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Overall pregnancy rate was 44.7% (21/47 patients).
  • Only 21.3% (10/47) of pregnancies proceeded to term.
  • All term pregnancies utilized enflurane as part of the anesthetic technique.
  • Patients receiving halothane experienced pregnancies that did not progress beyond the second trimester.

Conclusions:

  • Halothane use in general anesthesia for GIFT may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes.
  • Enflurane appears to be a safer anesthetic choice for GIFT, correlating with higher term delivery rates.
  • Further investigation into anesthetic agents and their effects on assisted reproductive technologies is warranted.
