Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between biomass fuel usage and sputum-positive pulmonary tuberculosis.
  • To quantify the risk of tuberculosis associated with biomass fuel exposure.

Main Methods:

  • A nested case-control study was conducted in Tamilnadu, India (2001-2003).
  • Bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis cases (n=255) were matched with controls (n=1275).
  • Data on biomass fuel use, smoking, alcohol, and Standard of Living Index were collected.

Main Results:

  • Biomass fuel usage showed an unadjusted odds ratio (OR) of 2.9 (95% CI 1.8 to 4.7).
  • The adjusted OR for biomass fuel use was 1.7 (95% CI 1.0 to 2.9).
  • Biomass fuel use was attributable to 36% of tuberculosis cases.

Conclusions:

  • Findings support an independent association between biomass smoke exposure and pulmonary tuberculosis.
  • Economic development leading to cleaner fuel use may reduce tuberculosis incidence.
  • Interventions targeting biomass fuel reduction could be key in tuberculosis control.
