Visual System01:26

Visual System

Light enters the eye through the cornea, a transparent, dome-shaped surface covering the surface of the eyeball that helps to direct and focus incoming light. This light is then channeled toward the pupil, an adjustable opening whose size is controlled by the iris. The iris, a pigmented muscle, regulates the amount of light entering the eye by contracting or dilating the pupil, thereby ensuring optimal light levels for clear vision.
Once through the pupil, the light passes through the lens, a...
Super-resolution Fluorescence Microscopy01:37

Super-resolution Fluorescence Microscopy

Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy (SRFM) provides a better resolution than conventional fluorescence microscopy by reducing the point spread function (PSF). PSF is the light intensity distribution from a point that causes it to appear blurred. Due to PSF, each fluorescing point appears bigger than its actual size, and it is the PSF interference of nearby fluorophores that causes the blurred image. Various approaches to achieving higher resolution through SRFM have recently been developed.
ER Retrieval Pathway01:45

ER Retrieval Pathway

In the secretory pathway, vesicles transport proteins from one cellular compartment to another in forward transport to deliver the protein to its correct location. Occasionally, misfolded proteins and incorrect proteins escape their original compartments, and a retrieval pathway is used to return the escaped proteins to their original compartment.
The ER uses many checkpoints to prevent the entry of incorrectly folded or a resident protein as cargo onto a transport vesicle. These mechanisms...

Area of Science:

  • Computer Science
  • Information Retrieval
  • Human-Computer Interaction

Background:

  • Relevance feedback (RF) is crucial for improving search results but faces scalability and efficiency challenges in web-scale image retrieval.
  • Existing commercial search engines lack RF support due to these limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a unified relevance feedback framework for web image retrieval that addresses scalability, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • To enhance user experience by introducing an implicit RF mechanism.

Main Methods:

  • A sequential integration of textual and visual features using a learned query concept-dependent fusion strategy.
  • An effective search result clustering (SRC) algorithm to create a low-dimensional textual space for web images.
  • A new user interface (UI) supporting implicit RF through click-through data and a recommendation scheme.

Main Results:

  • The proposed framework effectively combines textual and visual features for improved relevance.
  • Search result clustering enables practical integration of RF into web image retrieval.
  • The implicit RF UI reduces user burden and improves the feedback process.

Conclusions:

  • The developed framework is wieldy, scalable, and effective for large-scale web image retrieval.
  • The integration of implicit feedback and feature fusion offers a practical solution for commercial applications.
