A rare ameloblastic fibroma in a 10-year-old boy, initially misdiagnosed as a dentigerous cyst, was surgically removed. Follow-up radiographs confirmed complete bone regeneration in the surgical site after 21 months.

Area of Science:

  • Odontogenic Tumors
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Oral Surgery

Background:

  • A 10-year-old male presented with delayed eruption of mandibular teeth on the right side.
  • Radiographic examination revealed a large, multilocular radiolucent lesion affecting the canine, premolars, and molar.
  • Initial clinical diagnosis was dentigerous cyst.

Observation:

  • The lesion was surgically enucleated via curettage.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of ameloblastic fibroma.
  • Post-operative follow-up was conducted for 21 months.

Findings:

  • The ameloblastic fibroma was successfully treated by surgical enucleation.
  • Radiographs taken 21 months post-surgery demonstrated complete bone infill of the surgical defect.

  • No signs of recurrence were observed.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of histopathological confirmation for accurate diagnosis of jaw lesions.
    • Ameloblastic fibroma, though rare, can occur in the pediatric population.
    • Complete surgical removal and adequate follow-up can lead to favorable outcomes with bone regeneration.
