Summary

The ApolipoproteinE-epsilon4 (APOE4) allele is not associated with depression in elders when cognitive status is considered. Depression in cognitively intact elders is linked to female gender, not APOE4.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the APOE4 allele and depression in elders.
  • To determine if cognitive status confounds the APOE4-depression relationship.
  • To explore other factors associated with depression in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Case-control study with 1052 participants.
  • Participants included Alzheimer's disease patients and cognitively intact controls.
  • APOE4 genotyping and depression assessment were performed.

Main Results:

  • An apparent association between APOE4 and depression was observed in the combined dataset without controlling for cognitive status (p=0.001).
  • No association was found between APOE4 and depression in Alzheimer's patients (p=0.290) or cognitively intact controls (p=0.494).
  • Female gender was associated with depression in cognitively intact elders (p=0.003) but not in Alzheimer's patients.
  • Alzheimer's disease patients with depression had a significantly earlier age of onset (p=0.017).

Conclusions:

  • The APOE4 allele is not associated with depression in elders when cognitive status is accounted for.
  • Cognitive status is a crucial factor when examining the APOE4-depression link.
  • Female gender is a significant correlate of depression in cognitively intact older adults.
