Summary

Dental whitening, using hydrogen or carbamide peroxides, can cause tooth hypersensitivity. This common side effect, ranging from slight to intense, is expected in at least half of patients undergoing whitening treatments.

Background:

  • Dental whitening agents, including hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide, are widely used for aesthetic improvements.
  • These peroxides can potentially harm dental pulp, leading to various alterations and post-treatment tooth sensitivity.

Observation:

  • A clinical study evaluated 56 patients undergoing five different dental whitening techniques.
  • Techniques included in-office light-activated, in-office chemical-activated, in-office tray-based, at-home tray-based, and at-home varnish applications.
  • Post-whitening tooth hypersensitivity was observed in 55% of the treated cases, varying in intensity.

Findings:

  • All evaluated whitening procedures carried a risk of causing hypersensitivity, occurring in 31-55% of patients.
  • In-office light-activated (100%) and chemical-activated (70%) techniques showed higher rates of hypersensitivity.
  • Hypersensitivity, when present, was generally not severe and affected only a few teeth per patient.

Implications:

  • Dental hypersensitivity is a common and expected outcome following various dental whitening treatments.
  • Clinicians should anticipate and manage post-whitening sensitivity, regardless of the specific technique or agent employed.
  • Further research may explore methods to mitigate or prevent this prevalent side effect.
