Background:

Intermittent claudication (IC) causes leg pain during exercise, relieved by rest.
Supervised exercise therapy and medications are common treatments for IC.
Ginkgo biloba, a vasoactive agent, is explored for IC symptom management.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of Ginkgo biloba in improving walking distance for individuals with intermittent claudication.

Main Methods:

Systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing Ginkgo biloba extract to placebo.
Searches included Cochrane PVD Group Trials Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE/PubMed, and EMBASE.
Data extraction focused on patient numbers, walking distances, and standardized measures using caloric expenditure.

Main Results:

Fourteen trials with 739 participants were analyzed; 11 trials (477 participants) compared Ginkgo biloba to placebo.
Ginkgo biloba showed a non-significant increase in absolute claudication distance (effect size 3.57 kcal, P=0.06).
