Abstract:
It is a cross sectional observational study. Place of study was the ICU of Square Hospitals Ltd. and ICU of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). All patients who were diagnosed as a case of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) in ICU during the one year study period (01.01.2006 to 31.12.2006) were included in this study. Data was collected by patient's clinical register, checklist. Total number of patients was 43. Main objective of our study was to identify the organisms associated with VAP (Ventilator Associated Pneumonia) in intensive care unit (ICU). Organisms were collected by tracheal swab and were identified by culture and sensitivity test. Most patients were male. Age of maximum patients was in between 41 to 60 years. Commonest isolated organism was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Other organisms were Staphylococcus aureas, Klebsiella pneumonae, Enterobacter species, Proteus, Candida, Escherichia coli and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureas. Primary diagnosis of most of the patients was neurosurgical, medical and surgical origin. Mortality was 25.6% in our series.
