Individuals who develop acute mountain sickness (AMS) exhibit elevated arterial epinephrine levels during hypoxia. Norepinephrine levels are also higher at baseline and early in hypoxic exposure, suggesting a link between sympathoadrenal activity and AMS susceptibility.
