Overview
Phosphoinositides and PIPs01:42

Phosphoinositides and PIPs

Phosphoinositides are a group of phospholipids containing a glycerol backbone with two fatty acid chains and a phosphate attached to a myoinositol sugar ring. The inositol head group extends into the cytoplasm, where it is modified by adding phosphate groups to form phosphatidylinositol phosphates or PIPs.
Different phosphoinositides are synthesized and recruited on the cytosolic face of the plasma membrane. The localization of specific phosphoinositides concentrated in separate membrane...
Lipid Absorption01:24

Lipid Absorption

Dietary triglycerides from chyme in the duodenum are mixed with bile salts produced by the liver to emulsify fats. As a result, large droplets are broken down into smaller ones, increasing the surface area for enzymatic action. Once emulsified, pancreatic lipases hydrolyze the triglycerides into free fatty acids and monoglycerides.
These breakdown products bind with bile salts and lecithin to form micelles, which quickly pass between microvilli to come in close contact with the apical...

Summary

Plasma adiponectin levels are favorably associated with lipoprotein particle size, including LDL, VLDL, and HDL subclasses. This relationship is independent of body mass index and insulin resistance in young adults.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Lipid Metabolism

Background:

  • Adiponectin, an adipokine, plays a role in metabolic regulation.
  • Its influence on lipid metabolism and insulin signaling is under investigation.
  • Understanding adiponectin's role in lipoprotein profiles is crucial for cardiovascular health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between plasma adiponectin levels and lipoprotein particle size.
  • To examine the relationship between adiponectin and lipoprotein subclass concentrations.
  • To determine if these associations persist independently of obesity and insulin sensitivity.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional analysis of 884 young Israeli adults from the Jerusalem Lipid Research Clinic (LRC) study.
  • Lipoprotein particle size was measured using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
  • Multivariable linear regression models were employed to assess associations.

Main Results:

  • Adiponectin was significantly associated with mean LDL, VLDL, and HDL particle sizes.
  • Positive associations were observed between adiponectin and larger LDL and HDL particles.
  • Inverse associations were found with larger VLDL particles, indicating favorable lipid profiles.

Conclusions:

  • Adiponectin demonstrates a favorable association with lipoprotein particle size and subclass distribution.
  • These findings are independent of adiposity (BMI, waist circumference) and insulin sensitivity.
  • Adiponectin may be a key regulator of lipoprotein metabolism, irrespective of obesity and insulin resistance.
