Summary

This study investigated the oral health benefits of using Euclea natalensis root in South Africa. While the root showed antibacterial properties in vitro, daily use did not significantly improve oral health markers in the community.

Area of Science:

  • Ethnobotany
  • Microbiology
  • Periodontology

Background:

  • Traditional use of Euclea natalensis root for oral hygiene in South Africa.
  • E. natalensis root contains bactericidal naphthoquinones, causing distinctive oral staining.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To scientifically evaluate the claimed oral health benefits of E. natalensis root.
  • To assess the impact of root usage on oral hygiene indicators.

Main Methods:

  • In vitro testing of E. natalensis root extract against oral bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, saliva, periodontal isolates).
  • Clinical assessment of plaque index, periodontal index (CPITN), DMFT, and oral mucosa in root users and non-users.

Main Results:

  • E. natalensis demonstrated in vitro suppression of both aerobic and anaerobic bacterial growth.
  • No significant differences were found in plaque index, CPITN, DMFT, or oral mucosa between users and non-users.

Conclusions:

  • The bactericidal properties of E. natalensis root suggest potential scientific validity for its traditional use.
  • The limited extent of daily practice appears insufficient to yield measurable improvements in overall oral health indicators.
