Fibrae medullares in the retina of the RD mouse: a case report
1Department of Anatomy, Medical Faculty Carl Gustav Carus, Dresden, Germany.
Purpose:
A rare finding of fibrae medullares in the mouse eye is presented in an animal suffering from retinal degeneration.
Material And Methods:
Numerous eyes from different mouse strains were screened for myelinated fibres in the retina. Light and electron microscopy was used to document a single case in a rd mouse.
Results:
Myelinated fibres were found in the inner retina but not continuous with the optic nerve.
Conclusion:
Even in this highly degenerated retina the potency of the optic nerve fibres to become myelinated still remained. The source of the appropriate glia cells is discussed.
