The Hp 2-2 haptoglobin genotype was more frequent in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. This genotype is linked to advanced NPC stages and larger tumors, suggesting it may be a negative prognostic factor.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Oncology
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Haptoglobin (Hp) polymorphisms are linked to various cancers.
- The association between haptoglobin genotypes and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains uninvestigated.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the distribution of haptoglobin genotypes in NPC patients.
- To analyze the prognostic significance of haptoglobin genotypes in NPC.
Main Methods:
- Haptoglobin genotypes were determined using polymerase chain reaction and electrophoresis.
- Analysis was conducted on sera from 49 NPC patients and 134 controls.
Main Results:
- The frequency of the Hp 2-2 genotype was significantly higher in NPC patients (59%) compared to controls (p=0.044).
- NPC patients with the Hp 2-2 genotype exhibited advanced T stages (p=0.001) and larger primary tumor volumes (p=0.035).
Conclusions:
- An increased frequency of the Hp 2-2 genotype is associated with NPC.
- The Hp 2 allele is overexpressed in NPC patients.
- Hp 2-2 may serve as a negative prognostic indicator for NPC.
