Background:

Pathological love (PL) involves repetitive, uncontrolled care in romantic relationships, causing distress.
Despite its prevalence, PL is understudied.
This research addresses the need for understanding PL's psychological and relational underpinnings.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate impulsivity, personality traits, and romantic relationship characteristics in individuals with Pathological Love.
To compare these factors between individuals with PL and a control group.

Main Methods:

A comparative study involving 89 participants (50 with PL, 39 controls).
Assessment of impulsivity (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale).
Evaluation of personality (Temperament and Character Inventory), attachment, relationship satisfaction, and love styles.

Main Results:

Individuals with PL demonstrated significantly higher impulsivity.
Higher levels of self-transcendence (unconventionality, broader sense of communion) were observed in the PL group.
The PL group reported significantly lower satisfaction with their romantic relationships.

Conclusions:

Pathological love is associated with distinct personality profiles and problematic relationship dynamics.
These findings highlight the need for specialized assessment and therapeutic strategies for individuals experiencing PL.
Understanding these traits is crucial for developing effective interventions.
