Background:

Myocardial infarction (MI) necessitates effective post-event care strategies.
Evaluating the long-term economic impact of cardiac rehabilitation is crucial for healthcare policy.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct an economic evaluation of a comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program compared to standard care.
To assess the 5-year follow-up costs and health effects for patients post-MI.

Main Methods:

A 5-year follow-up study comparing a cardiac rehabilitation group (n=147) with a standard care group (n=158) of MI patients under 65 years.
Intervention included post-MI clinic follow-up, health education, and outpatient physical training.
Economic analysis focused on healthcare costs, readmissions, return to work, and total patient costs.

The rehabilitation program did not increase overall post-MI healthcare costs.
Reduced cardiovascular disease readmissions balanced program participation costs.
