Light-induced removal of 180 degrees ferroelectric domains in Rh:BaTiO3

    Abstract:

    We show that optically-induced photorefractive space-charge fields can remove 180 degrees ferroelectric domains in rhodium-doped barium titanate. The cross section of the domains must be small (less than 100 microns) for this process to occur.

    Materials like iron, nickel, and cobalt consist of magnetic domains, within which the magnetic dipoles are arranged parallel to each other. The magnetic dipoles are rigidly aligned in the same direction within a domain by quantum mechanical coupling among the atoms.
