Summary
Novel insecticidal molecules were created by conjugating imidacloprid (IMI) with crown ethers. These derivatives showed significantly higher insecticidal activity against house flies than the original IMI, with no effect from the crown ethers alone.
Area of Science:
- Organic Chemistry
- Insecticide Development
- Molecular Design
Background:
- Imidacloprid (IMI) is a widely used insecticide.
- There is a continuous need for novel insecticides with improved efficacy.
- Crown ethers are known for their ability to bind ions and molecules.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and evaluate novel insecticidal molecules derived from imidacloprid.
- To investigate the insecticidal activity of IMI conjugated with benzo-15-crown-5 and benzo-18-crown-6.
- To determine if the crown ether moieties contribute to or enhance insecticidal properties.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of imidacloprid derivatives conjugated with benzo-15-crown-5 and benzo-18-crown-6.
- Evaluation of insecticidal activity against house flies.
- Comparative analysis of the activity of the derivatives versus the parent imidacloprid and the crown ether structures alone.
Main Results:
- The novel imidacloprid derivatives exhibited strong excitatory toxic signs in house flies.
- Insecticidal activity was three to five times higher compared to the parent imidacloprid.
- The benzo-15-crown-5 and benzo-18-crown-6 structures alone showed no insecticidal effect.
Conclusions:
- Conjugation of imidacloprid with benzo-crown ether structures creates potent novel insecticides.
- The enhanced insecticidal activity is attributed to the combined structure, not the crown ethers independently.
- This approach offers a promising strategy for developing next-generation insecticides.

Production of Biopesticides
Biopesticides offer a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides, utilizing microbial agents to control agricultural pests. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a widely employed bacterium known for its potent insecticidal activity. Bt biopesticides are favored for their specificity to insect pests, minimal environmental impact, and natural degradability.Mechanism of Bt Toxin Action Bt produces insecticidal crystal (Cry) proteins during its sporulation phase. These proteins form parasporal...
Chemical Agents for Microbial Control
Chemicals play important roles in controlling microbial growth by targeting microbial structures and functions as sanitizers, antiseptics, disinfectants, and sterilants.Alcohols are commonly used sanitizers, effectively disrupting lipid membranes, which compromises cell integrity. They are also used as antiseptics and disinfectants due to their rapid action and versatility.Phenols and their derivatives phenolics , known for denaturing proteins and disrupting cell membranes, are particularly...
Anthelminthic Agents
Anthelmintic drugs differ significantly from antiparasitic therapies targeting protozoa, primarily due to differences in parasite biology. Whereas most protozoal treatments act on proliferating cells, anthelmintics are typically directed against mature, nonproliferative helminths. The therapeutic approach considers the helminth's reliance on neuromuscular coordination, glucose metabolism, and microtubular integrity for survival, reproduction, and localization within the host. Most anthelmintics...
