Summary

This case report details a 14-year-old girl with presumed Polyarteritis Nodosa (PPN). New findings include reduced salivary flow and mild chronic parotitis, with cysts and sialoliths visible grossly.

Background:

  • Polyarteritis Nodosa (PPN) is a rare systemic vasculitis affecting medium-sized arteries.
  • Diagnosis often relies on clinical presentation and biopsy, but atypical manifestations are increasingly reported.

Observation:

  • A 14-year-old female presented with symptoms suggestive of PPN.
  • Clinical examination revealed a decreased salivary flow rate.
  • Sialochemistry indicated a mild chronic parotitis.

Findings:

  • The patient exhibited gross (macroscopic) evidence of cysts and sialoliths in the salivary glands.
  • These findings represent novel additions to the classic clinical picture of PPN.
  • The sialochemical profile suggests an inflammatory process within the parotid glands.
