The Auditory Ossicles

The auditory ossicles of the middle ear transmit sounds from the air as vibrations to the fluid-filled cochlea. The auditory ossicles consist of two malleus (hammer) bones, two incus (anvil) bones, and two stapes (stirrups), one on each side. Summary

Stapes surgery for otosclerosis yields similar auditory results for both right and left ears. This study found no significant difference in hearing outcomes or sensorineural hearing loss between the two sides after surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective case-review of 894 stapes surgeries was conducted.
  • Patients were grouped by the operated ear (right vs. left) and categorized by preoperative air-bone gap (ABG) and bone conduction (BC) levels.
  • Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and chi-squared tests were used to compare postoperative outcomes, including changes in ABG and BC, and the incidence of sensorineural hearing loss.
