Hypothyroidism, a condition of underactive thyroid, is a common cause of high cholesterol in healthy individuals. This study found 6% of people with high cholesterol had undiagnosed hypothyroidism.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Metabolic Disorders
  • Thyroid Research

Background:

  • Secondary hyperlipidemia can be caused by hypothyroidism.
  • Subclinical hypothyroidism may contribute to elevated cholesterol levels in the general population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of biochemically diagnosed hypothyroidism in apparently healthy individuals with hyperlipidemia.
  • To investigate the association between hypothyroidism and plasma cholesterol levels.

Main Methods:

  • Thyroid function tests (total T4, TSH, free T4) were conducted on 272 healthy individuals with plasma cholesterol > 7 mmol/l and 90 controls with cholesterol < 4.1 mmol/l.
  • Participants were stratified by dietary habits (vegetarian vs. meat-eater).
  • Thyroid antibodies were measured in individuals with hypothyroidism.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Six percent of individuals with plasma cholesterol > 7 mmol/l exhibited biochemical hypothyroidism (TSH > 10 mIU/l, low free T4).
  • Eighty percent of these individuals had elevated thyroid anti-microsomal antibodies.
  • No hypothyroidism was detected in control groups with lower cholesterol levels or randomly selected participants.

Conclusions:

  • Hypothyroidism is a relatively common finding in apparently healthy individuals presenting with elevated plasma cholesterol.
  • Dietary habits (vegetarian vs. meat-eater) did not influence the prevalence of hypothyroidism in this cohort.
