Summary

Plantar heel neuroma, a nerve issue in the foot, is often missed and can cause severe pain. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for patients with chronic heel pain unresponsive to standard therapies.

Background:

Plantar heel pain is a common ailment, with many cases unresponsive to conventional treatments.
The medial calcaneal nerve is a potential source of chronic plantar heel pain.
Plantar neuroma, specifically of the medial calcaneal nerve, is an underdiagnosed condition.

Observation:

A case study of a healthy patient with chronic plantar heel pain is presented.
The patient's pain was refractory to a wide range of conservative treatment modalities.
Surgical intervention was ultimately required for the patient's condition.

Findings:

Plantar neuroma of the medial calcaneal nerve can present as debilitating heel pain.
Delayed diagnosis of plantar neuroma can lead to progression and the need for surgery.
This condition warrants increased clinical suspicion in cases of recalcitrant plantar heel pain.

Implications:

Enhanced awareness and diagnostic approaches for plantar neuroma are needed.
Consideration of surgical intervention may be necessary for refractory cases.
Further research into the pathology and optimal management of plantar neuroma is recommended.
