A rare presacral ectopic choroid plexus cyst was found in a neonate presenting as a buttock lump. Surgical removal confirmed the diagnosis, marking the first reported case in English literature.
Area of Science:
- Neonatal surgery
- Pediatric neurosurgery
- Developmental abnormalities
Background:
- Choroid plexus cysts are typically found within the brain ventricles.
- Ectopic choroid plexus tissue is rare and can occur in various locations.
- Presacral masses in neonates require careful diagnostic evaluation.
Observation:
- A neonate presented with a soft lump on the left buttock shortly after birth.
- Imaging revealed a presacral cystic lesion extending to the buttocks.
- The lesion consisted of multiple septated cystic masses without connection to the spinal canal or rectum.
Findings:
- The presacral cystic lesion was surgically resected.
- Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of an ectopic choroid plexus cyst.
- This represents the first reported case of a presacral ectopic choroid plexus cyst in the English literature.
Implications:
- This case expands the known spectrum of ectopic choroid plexus cyst locations.
- Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in neonatal presacral masses.
- Provides a reference for surgical management and diagnosis of similar rare pediatric conditions.
