Intrathoracic textilomas, or retained surgical sponges, can be identified using computed tomography (CT) scans. These masses often appear as extrapulmonary lesions with specific characteristics after cardiac surgery.
Area of Science:
- Radiology
- Thoracic Surgery
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Textilomas are rare retained foreign bodies that can occur after surgical procedures.
- Intrathoracic textilomas following myocardial revascularization surgery present diagnostic challenges.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the computed tomography (CT) findings of intrathoracic textilomas.
- To correlate imaging features with clinical history in patients post-myocardial revascularization.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of CT scans from five patients with post-thoracotomy textilomas.
- Independent analysis by two chest radiologists, with consensus on findings.
- Evaluation of lesion characteristics, including location, density, and enhancement patterns.
Main Results:
- All five cases demonstrated lesions resembling extrapulmonary masses with well-defined contours.
- Lesions were consistently located at the marginal posterior pleural surface.
- Four out of five cases showed a low-density center and peripheral rim-like enhancement post-contrast.
Conclusions:
- CT imaging can reveal characteristic features of intrathoracic textilomas.
- Suspicion should be high for textiloma in patients with prior myocardial revascularization presenting with posterior pleural masses.
