Summary

Acupuncture shows mixed results for allergic rhinitis (AR). While not effective for seasonal AR, it offers suggestive benefits for perennial AR symptom relief.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a prevalent condition impacting quality of life.

Twelve RCTs met inclusion criteria; 7 were of high quality.
Acupuncture did not demonstrate superiority over placebo for seasonal AR symptoms.
Suggestive evidence supports acupuncture's effectiveness for perennial AR symptom scores compared to placebo.
Two trials favored acupuncture over oral pharmacologic medications for AR.

Conclusions:

Evidence for acupuncture's effectiveness in AR is mixed.
Acupuncture shows potential for symptomatic relief in perennial AR.
Further high-quality research may clarify acupuncture's role in AR management.
