This study shows the event-synchronous interference canceller (ESC) effectively removes maternal ECG (mECG) from abdominal signals (ADS). This improves fetal electrocardiogram (fECG) analysis for better fetal well-being monitoring during pregnancy and labor.
Area of Science:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Signal Processing
- Obstetrics
Background:
- Abdominally recorded signals (ADS) are crucial for fetal monitoring, providing fetal heart rate (fHR) and QRS morphology.
- Maternal electrocardiogram (mECG) interference significantly obscures the fetal electrocardiogram (fECG) within ADS.
- Accurate fECG analysis is vital for assessing fetal well-being throughout pregnancy and labor.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the performance of the event-synchronous interference canceller (ESC) for mECG removal from ADS.
- To demonstrate the effectiveness of ESC in improving fECG analysis from abdominal recordings.
- To discuss the utility of ESC as a compensation method for extended ADS processing.
Main Methods:
- Utilized the event-synchronous interference canceller (ESC) algorithm.
- Applied ESC to ADS data recorded during pregnancy and labor.
- Assessed the performance of mECG removal and subsequent fECG analysis.
Main Results:
- The ESC effectively removed mECG components from ADS.
- Improved clarity of fECG signals was observed after ESC application.
- Demonstrated the feasibility of ESC for real-time and extended fetal monitoring.
Conclusions:
- ESC is a high-performing method for mECG removal in ADS.
- Enhanced fECG analysis via ESC contributes to more reliable fetal well-being assessment.
- ESC offers significant advantages for processing extended ADS data in clinical settings.

Correlation between ECG and Cardiac Cycle
A cardiac action potential originates in the SA node and spreads throughout the atria and the AV node in approximately 0.03 seconds. This results in the P wave in an ECG and triggers atrial contraction. The action potential is then briefly slowed at the AV node, allowing the atria to contract and fill the ventricles with blood before...
