Summary

Dual-source CT (DSCT) with ECG-gated tube current modulation reliably assesses left ventricular (LV) function. This technique maintains accuracy comparable to magnetic resonance imaging for global and regional LV function analysis.

Background:

  • Dual-source CT (DSCT) offers potential for cardiac imaging, but its reliability with dose modulation techniques needs evaluation.
  • Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is considered a gold standard for LV function assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the reliability of global LV function analysis using DSCT with and without ECG-gated tube current modulation.
  • To compare DSCT-derived LV function parameters against those obtained from cine MR imaging.
  • To assess the impact of ECG-gated tube current modulation on image noise and quantitative analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Seven pigs with induced myocardial infarction underwent DSCT (with and without tube current modulation) and cine MR imaging.
  • LV volumes, ejection fraction, and myocardial mass were calculated using the Simpson method from both imaging modalities.
  • Regional wall motion was assessed visually, and image noise was quantified and compared.

Main Results:

  • DSCT, both with and without dose modulation, demonstrated good agreement with MR imaging for LV function assessment.
  • Excellent concordance correlation coefficients were observed for ejection fraction between DSCT (norm vs. DM, norm vs. MR, DM vs. MR).
  • Regional wall motion analysis showed high agreement (kappa values) between DSCT and MR imaging.

Conclusions:

  • ECG-gated tube current modulation does not compromise the quantitative assessment of global and regional LV function using DSCT.
  • DSCT with ECG-gated tube current modulation provides reliable LV function analysis comparable to MR imaging.
  • This technique offers a valuable tool for cardiac function assessment with potentially reduced radiation dose.
