Abstract:
In recent years, the various types of skin cancer have been on the increase, with over-exposure to sunlight in people with sensitive skin being the main epidemiological risk factor (National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), 2006). This article discusses the second most common of the non-melanoma skin cancers, squamous cell carcinoma, and looks at epedimiology, assessment and treatment. The article also examines other skin lesions that may have the potential to develop into squamous cell carcinomas if left untreated. As these types of skin cancer are on the increase, the article will conclude with health promotion advice on how to avoid skin cancers and how nurses can play a role in their prevention.
