Background:

  • Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a distinct neurological syndrome characterized by sudden, temporary memory loss.
  • The underlying pathophysiology of TGA remains incompletely understood, with cerebral blood flow alterations being investigated.

Observation:

  • Technetium-99m-labeled hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (99mTc-HMPAO) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was utilized.
  • SPECT imaging was performed during an episode of TGA and at two subsequent time points for a single patient.

Findings:

  • During the TGA attack, SPECT revealed significant left thalamic hypoperfusion and less pronounced right thalamic hypoperfusion.
  • Global 99mTc-HMPAO uptake indicated a diffuse reduction in cerebral blood flow during the event.
