Summary

Domestic cats were tested on a string-pulling task to assess their understanding of physical causality. Results indicate cats do not consistently grasp the cause-and-effect relationship in this task.

  • Three setups were used: a single baited string, two parallel strings (one baited), and two crossed strings (one baited).
  • Performance was measured by the cats' ability to consistently select the correct string to retrieve an unreachable food treat.
  • Main Results:

    • All cats successfully retrieved the treat using a single baited string.
    • When presented with two parallel strings, no cat consistently chose the correctly baited string.
    • With two crossed strings, only one cat consistently chose the incorrect string, while the rest performed at chance level.

    Conclusions:

    • Domestic cats demonstrated an inability to consistently understand the physical causality involved in the string-pulling task.
    • Cats did not show evidence of understanding the functional relationship between the strings and the food reward in more complex scenarios.
    • The study suggests limitations in cats' causal reasoning abilities concerning tool-use-like tasks.
