Summary

Chest compression-only cardiocerebral resuscitation (CCR) is as effective or better than conventional CPR for adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. This simpler method is recommended for bystander use to save more lives.

Background:

  • Conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) involving chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth ventilation is life-saving but often not performed by bystanders.

  • To review the efficacy of chest compression-only cardiocerebral resuscitation (CCR) for adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
  • To evaluate the benefits of hands-only CPR as a public health intervention.

  • Review of recent observational studies on bystander CPR efficacy.
  • Analysis of recommendations from the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care committee.
