Summary

This study found no overall link between statin use and tendon rupture. However, women experiencing tendon rupture were more likely to have been using statins, suggesting a potential sex-specific risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • A case-control study was conducted using electronic medical records from 2002-2007.
  • 93 cases of tendon rupture were compared with 279 matched controls for statin exposure within the preceding 12 months.
  • Multivariate logistic regression controlled for diabetes, renal disease, rheumatologic disease, and steroid use.

  • No significant overall difference in statin use was found between tendon rupture cases and controls (OR = 1.10, 95% CI 0.57-2.13).
  • Subgroup analysis revealed statin use as a significant risk factor for tendon rupture in women (aOR = 3.76, 95% CI 1.11-12.75).
  • No significant association was observed in men (aOR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.29-1.51).

Conclusions:

  • Overall, statin therapy is not associated with an increased risk of tendon rupture.
  • A potential sex-specific association exists, with women showing a higher likelihood of statin use preceding tendon rupture.
