Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings.

Background:

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects 3-7% of the population.
ADHD symptoms significantly impact children's behavior and performance.
The SWAN Rating Scale measures attentiveness and hyperactivity.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the psychometric properties of the SWAN Rating Scale.
To assess the scale's ability to discriminate between ADHD subtypes.
To analyze ADHD subtype prevalence in the Australian Twin ADHD Study.

Main Methods:

Utilized questionnaire data from the Australian Twin ADHD Study (1990/2007).
Applied the Rasch model to evaluate SWAN Rating Scale items.
Examined item characteristics and discrimination power for ADHD diagnosis.

Main Results:

Prevalence: 5.3% inattentive ADHD, 4.3% hyperactive ADHD, 4.6% combined ADHD (14.2% total).
Inattentive items showed good internal consistency; hyperactive items were less consistent.
The combined ADHD subtype exhibited unique characteristics distinct from inattentive and hyperactive subtypes.

Conclusions:

The SWAN Rating Scale demonstrates utility in assessing ADHD symptoms.
Further research is required to clarify the distinct diagnostic features of ADHD subtypes.
The combined ADHD subtype may represent a unique clinical entity requiring further investigation.
