Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients with heartburn may have nonerosive reflux disease (NERD). Proton pump inhibitor (PPI)-responsive NERD is linked to dilated intercellular spaces (DIS) in the esophageal epithelium, indicating a barrier defect.
