Background:

  • Trypanosoma evansi is a protozoan parasite known to infect various mammals.
  • The impact of Trypanosoma evansi infection on feline hematology and erythropoiesis is not well-documented.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate hemogram and erythropoietic alterations in cats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma evansi.
  • To characterize the type of anemia induced by Trypanosoma evansi in domestic cats.

Main Methods:

  • Experimental infection of domestic cats (Felis catus) with Trypanosoma evansi.
  • Daily blood smear analysis and regular blood sample collection for 49 days post-inoculation.
  • Bone marrow analysis to assess hematopoietic response.

Main Results:

  • Significant decreases in erythrocyte count, hematocrit, and hemoglobin were observed from day 7 post-inoculation.
  • Cats developed normocytic-normochromic anemia with evidence of mild regenerative response (increased reticulocyte count).
  • A significant reduction in the myeloid:erythroid ratio in bone marrow indicated a hematopoietic response.
