Area of Science:
- Rheumatology
- Pediatric Medicine
- Physical Therapy
Background:
- Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is the most prevalent rheumatic condition in children.
- JRA is a significant contributor to childhood disability.
- Physical therapists are integral to the multidisciplinary JRA treatment team.
Purpose of the Study:
- To provide a comprehensive overview of JRA.
- To detail the role of physical therapy in JRA management.
- To discuss orthopedic manifestations and surgical options for JRA.
Main Methods:
- Literature review on JRA epidemiology and pathophysiology.
- Analysis of clinical characteristics of JRA.
- Examination of physical therapy principles, evaluation, and treatment techniques for JRA.
Main Results:
- JRA presents diverse clinical and orthopedic challenges.
- Physical therapy interventions are crucial for functional improvement in JRA.
- Understanding disease mechanisms informs tailored therapeutic strategies.
Conclusions:
- A thorough understanding of JRA's multifaceted nature is essential for effective physical therapy.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based physical therapy are key to managing JRA.
- This review synthesizes critical information for clinicians managing pediatric rheumatic diseases like JRA.
Abstract:
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is the most common pediatric rheumatic disease and is a leading cause of childhood disability. Physical therapists play a crucial role in the treatment of these children and serve as essential members of the interdisciplinary treatment team. An understanding of the etiology and background of this disease is critical to appropriate evaluation, goal setting, and treatment planning. This review article will provide an overview of the epidemiology, immune system pathophysiology, and clinical characteristics of JRA. Physical therapy principles of care, evaluation procedures, and treatment techniques will be covered in depth. In addition, common orthopedic manifestations and their management, including surgical approaches, will be discussed.
