Abstract:
Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography are important diagnostic tools to detect primary and secondary heart diseases. Quantitative analysis is more possible than when using other methods. In emergency situations on the intensive care unit, therapeutic decisions can be based on echocardiography, including the indication for surgery. Congenital and valvular heart disease can be diagnosed and graded according to the severity. For monitoring of cardiac function, echocardiography, particularly transesophageal echocardiography, represents the method of choice for detecting myocardial ischemia and monitoring valvular heart surgery.
