Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Sinonasal tumors are predominantly of epithelial origin.
  • Leiomyomas are exceedingly rare in the sinonasal tract, accounting for <2.5% of mesenchymal neoplasms.
  • This study contributes to the limited literature on sinonasal leiomyogenic tumors.

Observation:

  • A case of a 48-year-old woman with nasal obstruction due to a sinonasal polypoid lesion is presented.
  • The lesion was surgically removed and diagnosed as a leiomyoma.
  • This adds to the approximately 30 previously reported cases.

Findings:

  • Sinonasal leiomyomas exhibit no specific physical or radiological characteristics.
  • Definitive diagnosis relies solely on histopathological examination.

  • The tumor presented as a polypoid lesion causing nasal obstruction.
  • Implications:

    • Accurate histological diagnosis is paramount for appropriate management of sinonasal leiomyomas.
    • Increased awareness of this rare entity is needed among clinicians and pathologists.
    • Further research may elucidate specific diagnostic markers or treatment strategies.
