Intelligence and medial temporal lobe function in older adults: a functional MR imaging-based investigation

- Significant MTL activation was observed, but neither IQ nor years of education correlated with the volume or amplitude of this activation in either sex.
Conclusions:
- Intelligence and educational level did not significantly affect fMRI activation in the MTL during an episodic memory task in this cohort.
- These cognitive and educational factors may not need to be controlled for in study designs or considered when analyzing fMRI data in older adults.
